History and Introduction of the Department of Sports Medicine; Faculty of Physical Education and Sport Sciences

The Department of Sports Medicine was established within the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports Sciences of the University of Education due to urgent need in 2013. The first head of the department, Professor Qudratullah Azami, was appointed by the Faculty's Scientific Council. Later, Professor Mohammad Rasool Zalmai served as the head of the Department of Sports Medicine for a short time.

In 2018, this department was renamed the Department of Sports Medicine, and in 2018, Professor Mohammad Shafi Sakhizadeh was appointed by the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport Sciences, in the presence of the academic vice president and the university president, as the head of the Department of Sports Medicine. in 2025, Pohanyar Romal Akbari was appointed by the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport Sciences, as the head of the Department of Sports Medicine.

In the Department of Sports Medicine, the following subjects are taught scientifically and practically by the professors of this department: human anatomy, general physiology, sports physiology, sports first aid, sports hygiene, therapeutic physical education, sports nutrition, and sports pathology.

Vision of the Department of Sports Medicine

The Department of Sports Medicine, as one of the supporting and collaborating departments within the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports Sciences, envisions contributing effectively to the scientific advancement of the faculty through the teaching of fundamental scientific principles and the promotion of applied research in various fields of sports medicine. These include human anatomy, general physiology, exercise physiology, first aid, sports hygiene, therapeutic physical education, sports nutrition, sports pathology, and corrective and therapeutic exercises.

Mission of the Department of Sports Medicine

The Department of Sports Medicine is committed to providing scientific and practical education in various fields of sports medicine, preparing students to become skilled, professional, and dedicated specialists in the promotion of health, prevention of sports injuries, and enhancement of physical performance. Through teaching, research, and scientific services, this department strives to improve the quality of education and to foster effective collaboration with other departments within the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports Sciences.

Major Activities of the Department of Sports Medicine
  • Creating department plans, programs, and curricula and taking the necessary steps to approve them
  • Teaching medical physical education subjects related to the department, including: human anatomy, general physiology, exercise physiology, sports first aid, sports hygiene, therapeutic physical education, sports nutrition, sports pathology, public health, etc.
  • Organizing curriculum, assignments, trade projects, monographs and seminars
  • Planning the writing, translation, or preparation and arrangement of lecture notes, textbooks, teaching aids, and taking the necessary steps to print and publish the department's related works.
  • Necessary scientific, laboratory and field guidance related to the department
  • Making decisions regarding the appointment, dismissal, promotion of academic level, consolidation of academic rank, and academic promotion of members of the relevant academic staff of the department.
  • Designing development and improvement programs for the department in teaching and educational matters, including amending and supplementing the department's subject syllabi and related policies.
Achievements of the Department of Sports Medicine
  • Publishing scientific research articles by department professors in domestic and foreign journals.
  • Presenting scientific conferences at the Kabul University of Education level
  • Arranging the department's plans, programs, and curricula and taking the necessary steps to approve them each year.
  • Successfully teach department-related subjects including: human anatomy, general physiology, exercise physiology, sports first aid, sports hygiene, therapeutic physical education, sports nutrition, sports pathology, public health in each semester.
  • Organizing curriculum, assignments, trade projects, monographs and seminars
  • Compiling, translating, or preparing and arranging lecture notes, textbooks, teaching aids, and taking the necessary steps to print and publish the department's related works
  • Obtaining master's degrees for two of the department's professors
  • Necessary scientific, laboratory and field guidance related to the department
  • Issuing decisions regarding the appointment, dismissal, promotion of academic level, establishment of academic rank, and academic promotion of members of the relevant academic staff of the department.
  • Designing development and improvement programs for the department in teaching and educational matters, including amending and supplementing the department's subject syllabi and related policies.
