History of the Department of General Physical Education
- Based on existing writings, physical education activities and physical exercises have been common in Afghanistan since ancient times.
- The first king, named Yama, respected people who observed physical cleanliness and physical health.
- During the reign of Amir Sher Ali Khan, physical education activities were first officially introduced in military schools in the year 1249 of the Islamic calendar.
- In 1332, the sports School was founded with the aim of educating professional physical education cadres.
- In 1337, the sports School was upgraded to a Physical Education High School; in 1359, it was further upgraded to an Institute of Physical Education; and in 1366, it developed into a Faculty of Physical Education.
The first name of the Department of General Physical Education (Individual Sports) reflects 80 years of work experience, based on the curriculum of the time. It was initially established under the name of Sports School within the framework of the Ministry of Education in 1944, with 25 students from grades 7 to 9. After graduating from ninth grade, students of this department were employed as physical education teachers in schools across the country. In 1999, this department was renamed the Department of General Physical Education, in accordance with the national curriculum cluster and the proposal of the faculty, aligning with international standards of neighboring universities.
